It has been several weeks of working with my paintball guys on New England Carnage. I have not gone easy on them, but they are putting the work in each week, seeing improvements, and are motivated to keep going. Putting the work in outside the field to get better on the field is not easy and it is not for everyone, but Justin Hollis, snake player from New England Carnage, lays the groundwork of the mindset you need to have going into a new training program.
"I know you've heard it a thousand times before. But it's true. Hard work pays off. If you want to be good, you have to practice, practice, practice on and off the field. There is nothing better than feeling the burn from working out, just to burn a few more secs off my breakout! If you don't love what you do, then don't do it.
Justin Hollis, New England Carnage
Justin is not only the snake player for Carnage, he is also a Roofer by trade. He spends hot summer days climbing up and down ladders and atop scorching hot rooves all day long. He finds the energy to train and get better on the field because, as you have read, he loves putting the time and effort in to get better every week.
The benefits of training for paintball, help you not only in paintball, but in your everyday life. Carnage is made up of players of all shapes and sizes, and collectively there is a huge boost in athleticism and morale as the team goes into their next NEPL event this week. Bill O’Connell, who plays up the middle, and finds himself in the middle of the action every point, had this to say about training as well as the positive effects it has had on his life. “Since, as a team, we started working with Sam I have noticed a few things on and off the field. On the field I find us being much faster when we are running to bunkers, quicker when snap battling and mostly for myself I'm not losing my breath as quickly. Off the field I find myself having more energy, losing weight and overall much happier every day. I believe if we keep working with Sam we all will see even more improvement than we already have, and can say we are in better shape physically and mentally.”
See, I focused my work with these guys around bodyweight movement, and building up the core and legs. This was great because it did not require gym equipment, or a need to travel anywhere to work out. You can do all these workouts at home, or at the field. My feeling is that if you lack the ability to effectively move your own bodyweight, then adding weights can be detrimental, especially for paintball where being quick on your feet is a necessity. As well as looking to get stronger, I have incorporated bouts of steady state cardiovascular work throughout the week in order for them to build up their cardiovascular abilities as well as aid in burning extra body fat. Paintball is a game where you need to be fast, explosive, and able to make quick decisions as the situations arise. You will not be able to think straight, or be as quick as you like if you are struggling to find your next breath, or if your legs give out on you. Carnage has been doing amazing each week, and are getting much more comfortable and effective on the field.
Team Captain Ben Nelson shares his thoughts on the whole experience and the benefits it has had for his teammates as well as himself.
“Heading into week four of our workout plan I am feeling better than ever on and off the field. The team as a whole has seen a major improvement collectively. We are performing better, with the most unexpected improvement being that now that we are in better shape and not out of breathe on the field. There has been a major improvement in communication and field awareness”
Team Carnage is not the only guys stepping their game up and making sure they are prepared on and off the field. The Lift Laugh Live stable of Paintball Athletes is beginning to really grow and I am excited to help each of these players reach their goals. Rob Kiernan from New England powerhouse Preferred Mob had this to say about training through Lift Laugh Live.
"Working with Sam has help me both on and off the field, my workouts have made me want to work harder. And my playing on the field has progressed because the movements have become more natural and fluid"
Rob Kiernan, Preferred Mob
As a Trainer for these athletes, I am excited each and every week to get to be involved in their growth and development. Seeing them not only get better at the workouts, but feel better every single day is what this is all about. I love working with great people who love to work hard and improve themselves. It has been an honor and a privilege to be working with the guys from New England Carnage, Preferred Mob, as well as my fellow teammate Brendon from New England Legacy. I am excited to see where this relationship goes, and where I can help support these awesome players on their paintball careers.
